Kidding (2018)

This is called

Shaynas Sequence

a lot of people are tagging this with “film” and “movies” or talking about the magic of moviemaking but i really want to point out that Kidding is a TV show.

i feel it’s important to make this distinction because there’s a common (sometimes subconscious) thought that TV is a lesser form of digital art compared to film, but television, especially recently, has been phenomenal and it deserves proper credit as a storytelling medium, as well as a craft just as capable of amazing work like this

OK but I saw this thread on twitter a few days ago. Guy said thanks to this dude going all out on his cube and the management thinking it was like, the coolest shit, they are gonna start giving employees a budget to personalize their space. So yeah this IS more likely the kind of company you wanna stick with because they saw an employee go OFF on the decorating and instead of asking him to dial it back said “…holy shit we never thought of this, this is AWESOME go you!”

Credits to Voordeel on YouTube for creating this amazing and perfectly timed video

gaskarth-barakat:

In my freshmen year, we had a student teacher for English. He was young, funny, and a nice contrast from the cranky old lady we had for the last five months. One day in class, he introduced spoken word poems. To give us a visual on how they worked, he turned off the lights and played this video.

It changed my life.

When the movie ended, it was complete silence. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. We couldn’t grasp why he had shown us that particular video. It had touched everyone. There were tears in even the toughest students’ eyes. We all sat in earth shattering silence as he walked up to the front of the room again. He carried on with the lesson as if it were normal, and so did everyone else. Except me.

At the time, nobody knew about my depression. Nobody knew I cut, or that I threw up between meals, or that I wanted to kill myself every day. There had been a few instances where I thought the student teacher had seen a fresh cut or two littered on my wrist, but I had brushed it off until then.

He never brought it up. He never pried or called my parents or did anything to push the issue further. I don’t know if this was some kind of message or if it was coincidence, but I’m so glad I saw this video. It impacted my life in so many ways, and I actually get chills between the last word of a story and the first word of the next. I will never forget this video as long as I live.

Found in a 120 year old time capsule.

Full VDO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoDj4mXdqmc

Worth it.

I’m sorry I might sound like a madwoman for going on a rant about this but man, it’s…
I don’t know how to express it but just the thought of some person, 120 years ago, taking a photo of their cat, which back then wasn’t easy - they didn’t have phones with cameras, each photo required a lot of time and dedication, so not only the person “wasted” a whole photo on their cat, they also did their fricking best to save this photo and carefully put it into an envelope to preserve it so that people in the future will know that there was this cat and it looked like this and it’s owner thought the cat looked lovely that day so much that they decided to take a photo of it and then they loved the photo so much that they went out of their way to preserve it for future generations like “hello people from the future! this is what my cat loos like!” because they loved their cat so much they wanted people from the future to know about it is… crazy to me… and here we are, 120 years later, long after the cat and it’s owners passed away, looking at an old photo of a cat and gushing about it. The cat died so long ago and wouldn’t even know it existed if not for the owner that loved their cat so much that they decided this photo was worth preserving and put it into a time capsule. and seeing now how people dedicate whole blogs to their cats and take countless pictures of them just to show to other people really hits because you realize that in the end, people from today aren’t that much different from people that were 120 years ago. We all just love our cats and want people to look at them.

I bet this woman was imagining the photo may be seen by like… a family some day. But no. It survived till the age of the internet. It has now transcended the original media. It is now being seen by far more eyes in far more places than the media she chose would normally allow.

I hope the taker of this 120 year old photo is PROUD.

now i’m now expert on film and old cameras or anything, but isn’t this guy developing the picture? meaning that it wasn’t developed before? so the person who took the picture didn’t even know if it would come out right. they took a chance, and sure enough produced an absolutely stunning picture of their cat. how could they have known?

glass photographic plates were used to make multiples, thats what a ‘negative’ is for. this person probably had copies of this photo, but who ever they were loved their cat enough to keep the negative, so they would always have pictures of their cat.

every iconic gay kiss in xena in all its 90s censorship glory 💋

Holy shit, what censorship? How the hell did they get away with this? How is this not acknowledged more? Were straight audiences at the time just really dense? Did they really look at this unambiguous gayness and think “just gals being pals”? I need answers!

“Straight audiences at the time”? I STILL have to convince people that they were a couple. And not casual viewers–FANS of the show. Fans who were invested enough to write fanfics or edit fan videos.

From the conversations I’ve had, the logic from straight people is that because they both had male love interests at various points throughout the show, that must make them straight. Because bisexual people don’t exist, apparently.

I’ve had people tell me that they were super close “like sisters”. Speaking as someone who has two sisters, EEEEWWWWW. NO.

Anyway, the network wouldn’t allow the show to textually confirm their romantic relationship so almost everyone involved with the show did their very best to make it as queer as possible without actually saying it out loud and I am eternally grateful to them for that.

How are slow and tender kisses on the lips with romantic background music not textual confirmation though?

If you have half a brain, it is confirmation but they got around network objections by claiming the context of the episodes made them not gay.

They often utilized what fans now refer to as the “boyfriend of the week”. I’ve watched the show multiple times and I can’t even tell you how many random men they dragged in to be a love interest for a single episode. Basically, Gabrielle and Xena would do something INCREDIBLY gay but then the episode would quickly shift focus to whatever hetero plotline had been shoehorned in.

For example, that very first scene in the montage, the reason they’re saying goodbye is because Gabrielle is about to go off and marry a man. To anyone viewing that scene out of context, it is CLEARLY romantic but the network allowed it because literally the rest of the episode is about Gabrielle and her boyfriend of the week.

Luckily, they only had to do the boyfriend of the week thing for the first couple of seasons. Xena built up a strong following and fans started to get tired of the pointless hetero love interests so the show could drop them. Since it had already been established that Xena and Gabrielle were very physically affectionate with each other, it wasn’t seen as romantic for them to continue to be that way.

The key thing to remember here is that in the 90’s, a decent percentage of straight people didn’t want to acknowledge that non-straight people existed and would go to extreme lengths to justify things like sensual kissing in this supposedly platonic relationship.

Also, a few of those kisses were played for laughs which was A-Okay in the 90’s because haha, gay people.

Emma Myers is indeed billed after the boys, as we were warned when the first episode was screened.

Sorry, I’m sure there’s a lot more to unpack but that’s all I can think of right now.
